LONDON – A police helicopter captured the moment a machete-wielding attacker tried to smash into a back yard where children were playing, moments after he decapitated a great-grandmother.

Video footage shows Nicholas Salvador trying to push through the fence with the blade while the children are gathered up by their mother only a few feet away on the other side.

The 25-year-old had already severed the head of Palmira Silva, 82, in her nearby yard in the north London suburb of Edmonton last September.

Bare-chested Salvador is seen crashing through gardens behind homes as police desperately try to warn residents of the imminent danger.

“This man has decapitated a person already … We can confirm the lady is dead,” a voice on the recording can be heard saying. “He’s now smashing the premises up.”

As Salvador got closer to the children, unarmed police officer Steven Robertson defied an order to withdraw and scrambled onto a roof to warn their mother.

“He should be highly and publicly commended for that,” Recorder of London Nicholas Hilliard told a court Tuesday before finding Salvador not guilty of murder on the grounds of insanity.

Hilliard ordered Salvador be detained at a maximum security hospital under Britain’s Mental Health Act.

Prosecutors and defense lawyers each accepted the advice of psychiatrists that Salvador, who was staying with friends at a neighboring property at the time of the attack, was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia.
