With all of the wet weather this Spring season, it will be a vicious mosquito season, which is why P.E.T.S. Low Cost Spay and Neuter Clinic is offering free heartworm testing if owners purchase a 12 month supply of preventative.
They also offer half price testing if owners purchase six months worth of heartworm preventative.
Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquito bites, not from dog to dog.
“The life cycle of a heartworm is from mosquito to dog,” P.E.T.S. executive director, Leslie Harrelson, said. “It does take six months for the larva to turn into adults and test positive on a dog.”
Harrelson said that is why it is key to protect your pet, especially with a vicious mosquito season ahead.
“Texas is ranked in the top ten of the states that are most affected by heartworm disease in the United States, so it’s a really big deal and if you look at the map of overall cases of heartworm disease. North Texas falls in the very, very worst — most severe number of cases.”
Harrelson said the clinic has been on a mission to bring that number down.
“Before we started the P.E.T.S. clinic, well when we started the pets clinic, we would test heartworm positive dogs everyday. And our business was very slow. We were only open one or two days a week… and we only had fifteen to twenty walk-ins. So to have a heartworm positive dog everyday was huge. Now we go weeks and weeks between positive testing dogs,” Harrelson said.
Cats can contract heartworm disease, however they do not offer testing for purchasing feline preventative because for a cat to test positive the disease is usually advanced.
