Patients evacuated after explosion at Gatesville’s Coryell Memorial Hospital

GATESVILLE, Texas (KXAN) — An explosion has been reported at the Coryell Memorial Hospital in Gatesville, Tuesday afternoon. 

Ambulances are on the way to the hospital, including from Austin-Travis County EMS, which is sending five ambulances, a district commander and a division chief.

ATCEMS’ ambulance bus is also preparing to respond. Llano County EMS is also assisting.

The Austin Fire Department is also sending three trucks, one battalion chief and 10 structural collapse technicians to help after getting a request from the state. 

Local NBC affiliate KCEN reports 12 patients were evacuated from the hospital. The Temple Daily Telegram reports the explosion happened in the back of the hospital.

The explosion knocked out power to about 900 surrounding homes and businesses. Power is expected to be restored by 6 p.m., according to KXAN sister station KWKT.

Gatesville is located north of Fort Hood. 

Scott & White Medical Center in Temple and Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Hillcrest have activated their emergency operation centers and are preparing to receive and treat patients.
