When Airman First Class Caleb Schaper gets some free time, he often visits Sheppard Air Force Base’s Outdoor Recreation Center to get a break from routine.
“I’d say it’s very necessary and healthy to get away from studying and just having that free time and a lot of options available,” Schaper said.
The Outdoor Recreation Center offers airmen and their families the opportunity to relax and recharge with fun outdoor rentals and activities while off duty.
“It’s a different grouping of mental and physical opportunities for them to have a release and to enjoy the great outdoors,” Director of Outdoor Recreation Beth Clements said.
Clements’ job is to provide the fun and relaxation for airmen, something she believes is so important.
“The ability to have a mental release allows for the better moral, to be a better airman, and be ready to deploy and execute the mission whatever and whenever is called to duty,” Clements said.
Sheppard Air Force Base Airmen and their families also have full access to the pool and several other outdoor opportunities.
At the Outdoor Recreation Center, airmen can choose from bikes, party equipment, travel trailers and more. It’s all available to rent.
“We offer a great opportunity for everybody to rent anything and everything party equipment or adrenaline or low threat and self-directed opportunities,” Clements said.
While on duty, airmen like Schaper spend their time training and studying.
The Sheppard Outdoor Recreation Center offers them a much-needed release that helps them stay fit to fight where they can return again and focus on their mission.
