Thornberry: New Land Grab Legislation Coming

New legislation to save landowners from a so-called “land grab” by the BLM is on the horizon.

Last year 13th District Congressman Mac Thornberry introduced the Private Property Protection Act.

It was a bill he authored to address concerns of Texas landowners about actions of the Bureau of Land Management dealing with land along the Red River.

It aimed to protect those property owners by settling all federal ownership claims.

Thornberry says the bill died last year because Congress ran out of time before it could vote on the bill.

Now, the congressman is tweaking some of the verbiage in the bill.

He says he plans to reintroduce it soon.

“With any legislation, you don’t want to have unintended consequences,” he says. “That’s part of the reason I introduced a bill and then sent it to all of the landowners and other folks on the Oklahoma side as well as the Texas side and encouraged their input and feedback. That helps us mature the language so that we’ve done our homework and we’re ready to go.”

Thornberry says landowners really want this issue resolved because they feel like the land fight is reducing the value of their property.

He says he’s working with Senator John Cornyn to get the bill moved through the senate quickly.
