Wichita County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a homicide after a woman was shot early Saturday morning.
Yajaira Garcia,18, was found dead when deputies arrived on scene after deputies responded to the call in the 2600 block of Hammon Road just before 7 a.m. Saturday.
Sheriff David Duke said Joshua Christopher Ray Cook, 19, is charged with her murder.
Duke said he was the one to call authorities and complied with direction from deputies.
“When deputies arrived the male subject was here and he did have a firearm in his hand,” Duke said. “Deputies ordered him to drop the firearm, which he did, and they detained him.”
Duke said Cook will be arraigned tomorrow by a Justice of the Peace and his bond will be set.
According to Duke, the body will be sent to Tarrant County for an autopsy.
The WFISD school district released a statement:
It is with deep sadness that the Wichita Falls ISD family mourns the loss of one of our students today. Yajaira Garcia, a senior at Wichita Falls High School, lost her life due to a senseless act of violence early this morning.
Yajaira was active in Coyote girls soccer and the an active mentor in the Road to College program. Those who knew her describe her as a very smart, sweet and confident young lady. This is obviously a very tough loss for our community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family during this incredibly difficult time.
Additional counselors will be on campus beginning Monday to assist students as they work through this tragic loss.
