Local Sports

Earlier this year, when Griffin Fields took over as head coach of the Iowa Park Girl’s Basketball Team, It didn’t take him long to meet Emma Barker.

Barker battles type one diabetes… A disease Coach Fields knows far too well.

Emma Barker said, “He has a son that’s diabetic and then he figured out I was diabetic so he came up to me one day and said, ‘Hey I have an idea. Do you want to do a basketball game dedicated for diabetes?'”

Griffin Fields said,” Us having a type one diabetic in the program and a type on diabetic as a son you know that cause is a big deal to me and so we decided since November was Diabetes Awareness Month that we would come together as a team and a program and get the blue shirts because blue is the color that represents diabetes. And the girls were on board with it with Emma being a type one diabetic and seeing her struggles….

And from there the idea was put into action….. Emma Barker and Kyle Fields designed Blue T-shirts and began posting on social media to get the word out about the first ever type one diabetes game.
