Team of the Week: Iowa Park Football- December 13, 2018

Local Sports

The Iowa Park Hawk football team does not shy away from a challenge… And facing a tough Glen Rose offense in the state quarterfinals presented the biggest challenge yet.

Glen Rose came in with an 11 and 1 record, and sporting a 9 game winning streak…. and not only that.. playing in the Ford Center is a different animal.

Aubrey Sims said, “I thought we handled it great. It was loud. I was trying to yell at kids and try to get their attention and it just wasn’t happening in there and so when we fell behind I thought it was awesome of our kids that they together out there on the field encouraged each other and fired each other up. There was nothing really we could do because they couldn’t hear us on the sidelines.”

The Hawks were tied 14-14 at the half with the Tigers and fell behind in the third quarter. Iowa Park managed to get back within three points of Glen Rose in the fourth.

With under a minute left…….The play that changed it all. The Hawks decide to go for an onside kick. Brandon Hernandez recovers and the Hawks gain possession with plenty of time to get downfield.

Brandon Hernandez said, “Just praying and hoping that Trent and the offense could just gone down there and take advantage of the opportunity and get one more chance to score and get the win.”

Eight seconds left… Trent Green takes the ball nine yards for the game-winning touchdown . The Hawks win 31-28.

Aubrey Sims said, “Man, Ive been coaching for 21 years and that was the best ball game I have ever been apart of. Our crowd. Our community. Our band. Our band was awesome and it was just a great night of football for the Iowa Park Hawks.”

Kaden Ashlock said, “Yea it was crazy. It for sure was crazy. It was awesome.”

After the game….Running Back Brendin Fallon and  Quarterback Trent Green  shared the excitement of a team which has never stopped believing from day one.

Brendin Fallon said, “It was unbelievable.. I mean there’s nothing like it. I mean you get about once in a lifetime you get to play at the star if you don’t go to the next level, but this is awesome to play with my brothers.”

Trent Green said, “We’ve been underdogs every week but we still came out and executed to win. It feels awesome.. I cant even explain this.. I’m just so happy right now…”

Happy… might be an understatement.

Aubrey Sims said, “Its really just who we are this year, from the start of the season we had to where were at right now. That game was basically what our season was like.. you know fall behind… start off one and five and then just start fighting and doing things right.”

And the Hawks will keep fighting…. all 48 minutes on the clock on Friday night.
