Then & Now: 2013 Wichita Falls Coyotes Football - October 4, 2018

THEN

In this month's Then & Now series we travel back to 2013.

The Old High Coyotes can walk a little taller this week with a win over Fort Worth Brewer, the Coyotes get back to 500 on the season and get that district win that has eluded them for the last two years.

Danny Russell, "The kids played really hard. If I had to pick one thing that separated this game from the rest, it's that I thought our effort was so much better."

Starting quarterback, Eric Butler, threw for 139 yards in the Coyotes win saying this win is one step closer to their ultimate goal.

Eric Butler, "Well it means a lot. It's a step closer to the playoffs, and we're all feeling great about it."

To go along with his 139 yards in the air, Butler also led the team in rushing with 78 yards. Coach Russell saying they saved that part of their offense for that first district game. It's no secret though that the Coyotes most dangerous offensive weapon is wide receiver OJ Clark.

Danny Russell, "OJ's just a big time player. We're going to try and get the ball to him as much as we can in the football game. I mean Azle is probably going to have him double-covered, and that's okay."

Clark says of course a big part of his success is his familiarity with his quarterback Eric Butler.

OJ Clark, "We've been playing with each other since we were freshmen. We've worked hard all the way until now, and it's paying off."

Next up for the Coyotes is another tough district opponent. Old High facing the Azle Hornets on Friday night at Memorial Stadium. With the Team of the Week, Alex Zannes, KFDX 3 Sports.

NOW

Head coach, Danny Russell, left Old High in 2016 and has been at Garland High School since. The Garland program was on the way down when he took over, and he knew it would be a difficult rebuild. The Owls went 1-9 last year and are currently 1-4. Coach Russell tells me they are making progress and getting closer to turning the corner everyday. Coach Russell's son, Cody, who was in eighth grade at Barwise when he left, is now the starting quarterback. His daughter is the senior athletic trainer at Garland. His wife works at the middle school.

Eric Butler is a junior science major at Sterling College in Kansas. He's in his third season at Sterling. He's led the Warriors to a 3-2 record this season throwing for 864 yards, 10 touchdowns and just three interceptions. Butler has also rushed for 467 yards and seven scores.

OJ Clark is a junior education major at New Mexico State. He leads the Aggies in punt returns this season. He earned All-Sunbelt Conference recognition last season. In 2016, he led the Aggies with the most receptions. He has 15 catches so far for the Aggies this season.
