Then & Now: Quanah ends losing streak to Childress in 2002

Local Sports

In 2002 the Quanah Indians football team earned out Team of the Week honor and we recognize that team in this months installment of our Then & Now series.

For the first time since 1986, the Quanah Indians won a football game against the Childress Bobcats.

“It was a great win for our football team, for the community and for the school,” said Quanah head coach James McDaniel. “Anytime you beat Childress it’s a big plus for you.”

“It takes a lot of pressure off the team,” said Quanah quarterback Jeff Ward. “I was almost more proud of that win than any of the playoff games we won last year.”

“Our defense. One thing about Quanah is we’ve always played solid defense. Our defense has done a super job holding those guys down. And they only scored six points on us. They only has about 99 yards of total offense.

Coach McDaniel (now retired) can now often be found at Vernon College softball games. But in the fall he catches all of the Quanah home football games. When the Indians are on the road he heads to his “Game of the Week” whether it’s in Altus, Wichita Falls or any other Texoma town!

Jeff Ward is an assistant coach at City View High School under head coach Rudy Hawkins. Hawkins was an assistant coach in Quanah when Ward played for the Indians!
