The Wichita Christian Lady Stars golf team won state last week. This is old news for Savanah Snyder, who has won state as an individual the last three years, “I was wanting to beat my score and honestly beat the course, but there’s always next year to beat the course. And that’s what I plan on doing.”
Savanah says competing with a team adds her own personal set of cheerleaders, “As an individual you don’t have that team support, you’re going in by yourself. You only have your head, your mental game. As a team, I have the girls always with me and they’re like, Savanah you’re great, you’re so good, and they’re just always complimenting me, so it’s good to have a team.”
It’s also nice to have a team when you not only win state, but you win it by 89 strokes ahead of the second place team. Another crazy fact for you: other than Savanah, these girls are freshmen and sophomores, who picked up a golf club for the first time only a few months ago.
“I wanted to do a spring sport, because I was already doing soccer, and I like to do two sports at once, which is kind of inconvenient for my parents. I was going to do track, but Savanah really wanted me to do golf with her this year, so I was like, yeah sure, I’ll try it out. It ended up being a lot of fun, since we won state,” says freshman, Naphtali Bateman..
“Most of us came out here everyday and practiced for a couple of hours, and we went home and did it all the next day,” says freshman, Holly Proctor.
And who could make a better teacher than a three-time state champion? The Lady Stars are grateful to have Savanah by their side.
“She also helped us a lot on form and rules and basic golf stuff that we had no idea even existed,” says sophomore, Katie Cooper.
“I have at least another year, they have a couple more years. I think that if we come in next year as a team, too, we’re going to be even stronger and we’re just going to have a lot more fun,” says Snyder.
