The Brooks Sisters: Now and Then

What are Jasmine, Taliyah and Mercedes Brooks up to 11 years after we first interviewed them about their athletic skills?

Back in 2004 at a local track to three young ladies had qualified for a state meet. Jasmine Brooks at the time said “It feels really good to know you beat somebody out there that you never ran against before.”

The middle sister, Taliyah Brooks just finished her freshman year at Arkansas. It’s easy to envision Taliyah running or jumping, but throwing the javelin or shot put?

“Over the year I improved by about four feet from indoor to outdoor,” said Taliyah. “Really it could be either way, you could be a very technical thrower and make it go very far or you could just throw with all your power and hope it goes far which is what I do. Most of the heps are really small so we’re not really good at the throws.”

The big sister, Jasmine Brooks will graduate from Texas Southern this December.

The baby sister, Mercedes Brooks still has one year left at Rider High School, but she has already committed to play basketball at Kansas State.

This summer she’s played against Big 12-caliber competition and she says she’s ready to do it day in and day out.

“I mean I’m going to have to get stronger and bigger but I don’t feel i’m that far behind them,” said Mercedes.
